Just got back from vacationing in Costa Rica
We visited many parts of this Central American Country;
San Jose, Santa Ana, Puntarenas, Montezuma, Tortuga, Atenas, Jaco
Before the trip we read Nadine Hays Pisani's; Happier Than A Billionaire
a true story told with great humor about an adventurous young couple
who quit the American rat race to become permanent residents in Costa Rica

"Pura Vida" is a phrase commonly used by the locals that means literally, pure life
it's used to say hello, goodbye, thanks, enjoy, etc...
kinda like, "take it easy" or "life is good"
kinda like, "take it easy" or "life is good"
I think it can also mean That's Life, because it may be used to say
no worries, I know I'm late, that was an epic fail,
...here have a coconut
| our cabin at hotel Los Mangos in Montezuma |
Being in Montezuma made me want to do like Paul Gauguin;
just pick up and leave my present life
to go paint the natives in a primitive paradise
to go paint the natives in a primitive paradise
| Capuchin monkeys over our table at Sano Banano restaurant |
It's very green there, like Oregon,
only with jungle plants and angry monkeys
only with jungle plants and angry monkeys
more to come about the wildlife in Costa Rica
PURA VIDA!
(I'll leave the interpretation to your own discretion)

Wow, Silvina. It looks wonderful, esp. since we have about a foot of snow right now.
Such a great trip, Silvana!!! Wonderful!! Be safe and have the time of your life.
Happy Thanksgiving!!
Thank you for sharing your experience! It sounds like an inspiring vacation, thank goodness you decided to come back! :) You would be missed!
Sounds and looks "pura." We all need more of this!
Thank you for sharing part of your vacation. Wouldn't it be great to have the option of living there for some portion of the year?
Looking forward to more images and future paintings.
Diana, you can get some really good deals on flights to Costa Rica, if you find you just can't take the cold anymore. You can't imagine the heat there. It's like a sauna!
Marian, Happy Thanksgiving to you!
Karen, if I decided to move to Costa Rica, I would still paint and maintain my blog! They are very big on internet service there. Everybody is online!
Melinda, you CAN live there part of the year. They rent houses for very reasonable rates.
More images and paintings to come. : )
I think you should do the Gauguin. To keep faithful to him, send letters back to your spouse/children telling them how tough you have it. You can tell by the photos it must be MISERABLE living there.
Bill,
I remember when I read about Gauguin's life, I thought he was the ultimate self-absorbed, arrogant jerk.
But now that I've been to a tropical country I know that being in paradise isn't all it's cracked up to be; the monkeys don't let you eat your papaya in peace, the threat of coconuts falling on your head, the constant distraction of warm ocean water... nightmarish.
my daughter and I took an REI led trip to Costa Rica several years ago and it was a blast. We cycled through the central mountains ( I couldn't do it now) and rafted to a tree house one night. I loved it there and have always regretted that I didn't have a sketch book.
Wait a minute. I did have a sketchbook. What I meant to say is I wish I had taken more time to sketch.
