Independent Woman, 14 x 11" oil

monday afternoon I visited
my grandmother

early the same evening
 she passed away

...
childhood memories
are flooding my mind

my grandmother was
a very strong
independent woman

she delighted in playing chess
even with a 7 year old

she often let me win

I remember

tantalizing aromas emanating
from her little kitchen

the smell of her fine perfume
mingled with cigarettes & tea

hailing taxis in the rain

summer train rides to the countryside

feeding pigeons in the plaza

the sound of her high heels
on the cobble stone streets
of buenos aires

her stern look

making her laugh

 bedtime stories

visits to art museums

fear of being kidnapped
by the gypsies in
wildly colored clothing

holding on tight

letting go
...

Abuela; algún día
volveremos a jugar ajedrez

mientras tanto, "quedate tranquila nena"

ciao,
besos y abrazos, Silvi

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your grandmother. How wonderful that you got to see her on her last day. Your striking painting says so much of your feelings for her strength and nobility and character.

My own grandmother passed away decades ago. I miss her still, but know I will see her again with the Lord in Glory.

What a treasure to have had, and how marvelous she must have been for a little girl. It sounds like she lived quite a life. I hope you can feel the blessing along with the loss. (And I love your free verse.)

So beautiful Sil.

Melinda, I have so much more to say. After I wrote this, I thought of 50 more things I should have written. My "abuela" was a force to be reckoned with and at the same time fiercely protective and maternal.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

I'm so sorry, Silvina. I'm sure your grandmother would have been moved by your heartfelt words and lovely painting. Glad to see you found a thematic way to express your feelings for her.

Adair, my grandmother had artistic talent but was unable to continue her fine art studies, so she recognized that I had inherited a bit of that talent and really encouraged me to develop it. I hope she is pleased. Thanks so much for commenting.
